Your overall band is the average of your four module bands, rounded to the nearest whole or half band. The rounding rule is fixed and worth knowing, because it decides borderline cases.
If the average ends in .25 it is rounded up to the next half band. If it ends in .75 it is rounded up to the next whole band. Anything else rounds to the nearest half band in the normal way.
Listening and Reading each have 40 questions, and one mark per correct answer. The raw score out of 40 is converted to a band using a conversion table.
The conversion is not identical for every test paper — each version is adjusted so that a band means the same thing regardless of which paper you sat. The tables in this calculator are the widely-published typical conversions, and they are accurate enough for tracking progress on practice material. Treat any single-mark difference near a band boundary as noise.
Academic Reading and General Training Reading use different conversions. General Training Reading is marked more strictly, because its texts are easier — the same raw score gives a lower band than it would on Academic Reading. Listening uses one conversion for both.
Bands run from 1 to 9 in half-band steps, and describe what a candidate can do rather than a percentage correct.
Requirements are set by the institution or immigration authority, never by the test itself, and they change. Always confirm the current requirement with the organisation you are applying to before setting your target.
Add your four module bands, divide by four, then round: an average ending in .25 rounds up to the next half band, and an average ending in .75 rounds up to the next whole band. All four modules carry equal weight.
On Academic Reading, band 7 typically starts at around 30 correct answers out of 40. On General Training Reading it typically starts at around 34 out of 40. The exact figure varies slightly between test versions.
